The Lab is Heading to Hamburg: Meet Us at SMM 2026

Every two years, the maritime industry converges on Hamburg for SMM – the world’s leading trade fair for shipbuilding, machinery, and machine technology. This September, The Lab will be there too.

SMM runs from 1^st – 4^th September at Hamburg Messe und Congress, and we’ll be at Stand 316, ready to talk forensic materials testing, corrosion mapping, and everything in between with vessel owners, operators, class societies, and engineers from across the global fleet.

Why SMM, and why now?

SMM isn’t just another exhibition. Across its four days, the show brings together thousands of exhibitors and tens of thousands of visitors from every corner of the maritime world, all wrestling with the same questions: how do we keep ageing assets safe, how do we cut the cost of downtime, and how do we build the evidence base for smarter, long-term decisions about vessel maintenance?

Those are exactly the questions The Lab was built to answer. We’re not there to sell steel or software – we’re there to talk about what happens when something has already gone wrong, or is about to.

• Our CMAP service: corrosion remains one of the maritime industry’s most expensive and least understood problems. Our CMAP service – a Lloyd’s Register-validated corrosion mapping technique built on pulsed eddy current array (PECA) inspection – scans entire vessel structures rather than relying on spot checks, then turns the results into a visual, data-rich picture of steel condition, remaining wall thickness, and material loss. It’s designed to give owners and operators the clarity to plan repairs, manage costs, and reduce time in dry dock – before problems become expensive surprises.
   
• Our forensic edge: ultrasonic testing and other NDT methods can tell you a flaw is there. Our materials scientists use laboratory-grade analysis to explain why the flaw occurred – whether that’s fatigue, corrosion, a material defect, or a manufacturing fault. It’s the difference between finding a crack and understanding its story, and it’s why our clients come to us not just for inspection, but for answers.
   
• Our multi-industry expertise: whilst our roots are firmly in the maritime sector, our team’s expertise stretches into energy, manufacturing and fabrication, giving us a broader vantage point on failure patterns, materials behaviour and inspection best practice than a marine-only lab could offer. That cross-industry perspective often surfaces insights that a narrower specialism would miss.
   
• Our credentials: our engineers work to BINDT/PCN certification standards and NDT Level 3 capability, so whoever you speak to on the stand will be able to talk technique, standards and application in real depth – not just marketing lines.
