AMS in collaboration with The Lab at Brookes Bell aims to provide the highest quality products and services to their clients. Their laboratory is accredited to BS EN ISO/IEC 17025:2017 which practically recognises their competence, impartiality and consistent operation.

It’s two main clauses are management and technical requirements against which we are being audited on a yearly basis. The technical requirements address the competence of staff; testing methodology; equipment and quality; and reporting of test and results.

The management requirements are related to the operation and effectiveness of the quality management system within the laboratory, and this clause has similar requirements and operations in accordance with ISO 9001.

AMS operates an Integrated Quality Management System to ensure that Quality processes are managed in an effective manner to the satisfaction and benefits of its stakeholders. BS EN ISO/IEC 17025:2017 is accredited by UKAS and BS EN ISO 9001:2015 is certified by a UKAS accredited certification body Alcumus ISOQAR.

Routine Services - Mechanical Testing

Hardness Testing:

Typical test specifications include ASTM E10*, ASTM E18, ASTM E92, ASTM E384*, ASTM A370, ASTM E110, BS EN ISO 6506, BS EN ISO 6507 and BS EN ISO 6508.

Tensile Testing:

  • Typical specifications include ASTM E8/E8M, ASTM A370, BS EN ISO 6892-1, ASTM B557M, ASTM E21, BS EN ISO 6892-2 and compressive yield in accordance with ASTM E9. Testing to the above specifications is UKAS accredited to ISO/IEC 17025:2017.
  • Bespoke jigs can be manufactured to test in principle any component as per the client's requirements.
  • Testing of all types of materials and products such as forgings, fasteners, bolts, rebars, castings, forgings, wires, and many more.
  • Tensile (ambient temperature, forces from 1.5 kN to 1000kN). Elevated temperature tensile testing from ambient to 200°C (forces from 1.5kN to 150kN).

Impact Testing:

  • Charpy Testing can be carried out at temperatures between –196°C and room temperature °C. Typical specifications include ASTM E23, ASTM A370, BS EN ISO 148-1. AMS utilises two impact testing machines, both automatic with capacity of 450 (J).
  • Testing to the above specifications is UKAS accredited to ISO/IEC 17025:2017.

In-situ material analysis

We understand that it’s not always possible to transport samples or destroy component materials, so The Lab has invested in the latest portable testing equipment, so that our experts can come to you to carry out material analysis.

These assessments can either form part of a failure investigation, or part of the normal manufacturing quality assurance process.

Our portable chemical analysis equipment consists of:

  • LIBS - laser-induced breakdown spectrometry
  • PMI-OES - positive material identification – spark - optical emission spectrometry

Our portable mechanical testing equipment includes:

  • Leeb d rebound hardness test (LRHT)
  • Ultrasonic contact impedance (UCI)

Material investigation equipment rental

Do you need to investigate a material yourself, but don’t want to go to the hassle or expense of purchasing the necessary equipment?

Then you can rent it from The Lab instead.

All of our material investigation equipment is available under a series of different rental agreements. What’s more, The Lab can provide training so that you and your team are able to utilise the equipment to the fullest extent.
