Innovative Packaging Solution: Schütz's Combi Steel Drum

Innovative Packaging Solution: Schütz's Combi Steel Drum

Schütz has revolutionised drum packaging by combining the best properties of steel and plastic in their new Combi steel drum.

In an effort to face the ever-increasing demands of a constantly evolving world of packaging, Schütz has created the innovative Combi steel drum, a packaging solution that merges the strengths of both steel and plastic materials.

Renowned and widely used for its stability, safety, and excellent protection against permeation, steel is often used to provide a robust exterior that can withstand significant external pressures.

However, when it comes to chemical resistance, corrosion resistance, and maintaining the purity of contents, plastic materials, such as high-density polyethylene (HDPE), have the upper hand.

Recognising the unique benefits of both materials, Schütz has developed the Combi steel drum, which integrates a standard coated steel drum exterior with an inner liner made of high-quality HDPE plastic.

This innovative combination offers numerous advantages. The two independent containers deliver double leakage protection, significantly reducing the risk of spillage and ensuring the safe transport of goods.

The Schütz Combi steel drum also excels in hot filling processes. Unlike conventional polyethylene (PE) drums, which require careful timing to prevent collapse during hot filling, the Schütz Combi drum can be stacked immediately after filling.

Serial production of the Combi steel drum commenced in autumn 2024 at the Schütz plant in Selters, and is available in both a 205-litre version with a 3 kg inner liner or a 202-litre version with a 6 kg plastic liner, along with various steel drum sheet thickness options.

Furthermore, Schütz provides an additional customisation option with their innovative Laser Drum, which uses a special laser technology on the exterior coating for superior material and processing quality.

The Schütz's Combi steel drum represents a significant advancement in packaging technology. By combining the strengths of steel and plastic, Schütz has created a versatile, reliable, and safe packaging solution that meets the complex demands of today's supply chains.
